Crisp Morning is a peaceful slow-stitch landscape inspired by the soft colours of an early winter morning. Gentle layers of pale blue, lilac, frosted pink, cream and grey create a subtle countryside colour wash, while the winter trees, hedgerows, rustic gate and foreground plants are brought to life entirely through hand stitching.

 

This relaxing textile-art project is designed to encourage you to slow down, enjoy the process and create something using fabrics from your own collection. You can follow the original design closely or adapt the colours and stitching to make your finished piece personal to you.

FINISHED SIZE

The finished textile artwork measures approximately 6 × 8 inches.

 

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED

• Calico or firm cotton measuring approximately 8 × 10 inches

• Assorted batik, plain cotton, hand-dyed or small-patterned fabric scraps

• Cotton perlé size 8 or embroidery threads in coordinating winter colours

• Brown thread for the stitched trees and gate

• A size 22 or 24 chenille needle, or another sharp needle with a large eye

• Scissors

• Pins or tacking thread

• A small amount of fabric glue, if desired

• An 8 × 10-inch frame with a 6 × 8-inch aperture, if you wish to frame your finished piece

The original design uses softly blended shades of pale blue, icy blue, blue-grey, lilac, frosted pink, white, cream, grey and cool blue-green. The trees, gate and other focal details are created with thread rather than fabric.

 

PRINTING

The pattern is suitable for printing on either A4 or US Letter paper in portrait orientation.

Print at “Actual Size” or 100%. Do not select “Fit to Page”, “Scale to Fit” or another scaling option.

A clearly marked 1-inch test square is included so that you can check the stitch-placement guide has printed at the correct size. The instruction pages can also be viewed on screen if you prefer to print only the full-size guide.

 

SKILL LEVEL

Beginner-friendly. The instructions guide you through building the layered fabric background and adding texture with simple hand stitches. A stitch dictionary with diagrams is included for additional support.

Please remember that slow stitching does not need to be perfect. Enjoy choosing your fabrics, follow the gentle shapes of the landscape and allow your own stitching style to become part of the finished piece.
